Bachelor of Music Studies (Trumpet)
Ryley Gillen's career in creative arts began when he started learning the trumpet, playing for the cows on the family farm in Nowra Hill at the age of seven. Being passionate and showing a natural talent for music Ryley took every opportunity to engage in the creative arts scene in the Shoalhaven and looked for every chance to play for the local town band, youth orchestra and school ensemble. Deciding that music was a career he wanted to pursue Ryley underwent study at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, completing his studies in trumpet, conducting and primary and secondary education in 2015.
Now residing in Wollongong, Ryley is heavily involved in the art scenes in regional areas. Working as a brass tutor at the Goulburn Regional Conservatorium, Wollongong Conservatorium and in the Southern Highlands, Ryley inspires young musicians to be the best they can. As a performer, Ryley regularly performs as a pit musician, playing for musical theatre productions in Sydney and down the South Coast. Most recently Ryley played lead trumpet for the NSW amateur premier of Dreamgirls (Rockdale Musical Society, 2017). Ryley also performs regularly with his brass quintet and as a trumpet soloist. Some of Ryley's most cherished performances include his Music Shoalhaven Recital (Nowra 2016), performing with James Morrison and Sydney Conservatorium Trumpeters at the Sydney Town Hall (2014), receiving the Les Crosby Jazz Scholarship (2014) and featuring as solo C Trumpet and Piccolo Trumpet in the Lydian Singers performance of Stella Natalis (Nowra, 2014).
Outside of trumpeting, Ryley is Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of Illawarra On Pointe Productions, an orchestral and dance company. As Artistic Director of Illawarra On Pointe Productions, Ryley began the mentorship initiative. This mentorship allows aspiring young musicians to perform in the company's various productions. The mentorship provides these musicians with the opportunity to play in a skilled symphony orchestra and work with high calibre performers and at professional venues. For regional areas like Goulburn, Shoalhaven and the Illawwarra this is an invaluable opportunity. For Illawarra On Pointe Productions, Ryley has produced and conducted their 2015-2017 productions including their forty-piece orchestral classical concert series Classical Horror (2015), the company's inaugural ballet production The Nutcracker (2016), South Pacific: In Concert (2017), Peter and the Wolf Regional NSW School Tour early 2017 which toured Nowra, Wollongong and the Southern Highlands and Classical Music From The Screen (2017). As Artistic Director, Ryley has directed the company towards commissioning a new ballet. He looks forward to working closely with Illawarra ballet dancers and musicians as they present Peter Pan in 2018, the Illawarra's first commissioned ballet.
As well as brass playing, conducting and running a production company, Ryley has been busy of late in the role of music adjudicator, having adjudicated at the City of Shoalhaven Eisteddfod (Nowra), Charters Tower Eisteddfod (Queensland) and Junior Music Festival (Wollongong) in 2017.
Ryley looks forward to further developing the brass scene in Goulburn, continue conducting the GRC Concert Band and working with supportive staff and engaged students at the GRC.
